Welcome! There is a ministry designed for everyone!

The Advent Youth group has done a variety of mission projects. One of its main emphasis is to try to raise awareness of the problem of hunger locally as well as globally. The following is a list of the different mission activities in which the youth have been involved.

Organized by Church World Services, this 5K walk is held locally in October to raise money for a variety of charities that combat hunger worldwide. Sponsors’ pledges are solicited.

Typically scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday in December, the youth group prepares approximately 350 hot meals and bagged lunches for York Helping Hands for the Homeless. They travel to three sites in York city to serve the meals. Before they go, they collect clothes donations from the congregation which are then directly given to the needy. Since this is usually done in December, they also spread cheer with Christmas caroling as the homeless wait in line to get their meals.

To help raise awareness of worldwide hunger, the youth go out into the East York community to spread this word. One Sunday in December close to Christmas, the youth group sings “terribly” at houses around the neighborhood. They stop singing “terribly” and sing some nice carols when the household donates money, contributes canned goods, and/or prays with the youth group.

The youth group has a Thirty-Hour Famine which is a World Vision sponsored event to help youth fight hunger internationally. The youth get sponsors to donate money toward their fast of 30 hours. Upon completion of the famine, they come together for a meal and the money raised is sent to World Vision.

The senior high youth of Advent has the opportunity to participate in a Mission Camp during the summer. They traditionally base this at Advent’s Friendly Acres Camp and do work locally. Some of the tasks include performing yard work at homes of homebound members and at nursing facilities, cleaning and organizing at Friendly Acres and York Helping Hands for the Homeless, and working on a house with Habitat for Humanity.

Sponsored by LutheranHANDS, the youth travel to New Orleans to help in the reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Katrina. While there, they bunk in a church whose mission is to offer the hospitality of room and board to groups while they rebuild the area. The LutheranHANDS in coordination with Habitat for Humanity identifies and supervises the work projects.
