Holy Communion is a gift from God and a special meal of
bread and wine/grape juice which is celebrated during worship.
Through this meal, baptized Christians receive God’s presence, love,
forgiveness, and strength. The First Communion training is composed
of four classes generally held during the Sunday School hour during
the month of February.
At the completion of communion training, a special Saturday
worship event will take place in which children and youth celebrate
their First Communion. Family, friends, and the Church are invited
to attend this celebration.
Week 1 Free and Undeserved
We learn that our relationship with God begins in baptism and we
discover that the gifts that God gives us are free and undeserved.
Week 2 God Will Provide
The story of God saving his people from slavery in Egypt is role
played. We learn of the Passover meal which celebrates that God will
provide and this understanding becomes the basis for the discussion
of Holy Communion in class number 3.
Week 3 Free from Pharaoh to Free from
Before his death, Jesus celebrated the Passover meal and did a new
thing when he offered himself to his followers in the bread and wine
of Holy Communion. This very first Communion also known as the Last
Supper will be enacted by the children.
Week 4 With God's Family at the Table
Previous week’s themes are reviewed and children get to practice how
to receive communion. They are given the opportunity to taste a
wafer and wine.
